As an environmentalist, I am eager to save any little piece of the earth that I can.  That’s why I’m excited about The Online Ledger, the paperless and waste-free version of the school newspaper.  But, I’ve always been known as a “classic” kind of girl.  My Sunday school recently praised me for knowing songs from the 1960s and 70s.  I love the nostalgia of the printed newspaper.  When I first started newspaper, I immediately thought of the old-fashioned reporters that I see in movies.  (The ones with the cool hats with the press pass stuck in the band.)  I’m stuck between the trend and the nostalgia.

Readers are online.  The internet has become a major part of student life.  Essays are done in MyAccess, Google is used for research and whatever free time we manage to get is spent on Facebook.  I haven’t found a Lovejoy student yet who refuses to go online for anything.  But the generations before us are a little more reluctant to switch to an online lifestyle.  Yes, it’s true that many older people embrace technology.  My Grandma had a Facebook before I did.  But some, like my Granny, still faithfully rely on the daily newspaper to get their information.

The Red Ledger went online to give readers a choice.  As managing editor of The Online Ledger, I’ll make sure that people who need a steady stream of new information can find it.  Those who want something tangible still get their printed Red Ledger.  And people like me who are caught in the middle get both.
