Each year the United States is praised when they donate $62 million to Africa and yet that cost makes up .03% of what American consumers spend on holiday gifts. If every family cut their spending in half and donated that money instead to a foundation such as the World Food Programme (WFP) or UNICEF, America could provide basics like food, clean water, medical supplies and relief to nearly 3 million children and families living in poverty around the world for a whole year. The numbers are real and so is the suffering of millions of starving children around the world.

As an environmentalist, I am eager to save any little piece of the earth that I can. That’s why I’m excited about The Online Ledger, the paperless and waste-free version of the school newspaper. But, I’ve always been known as a “classic” kind of girl. My Sunday school recently praised me for knowing songs from the 1960s and 70s. I love the nostalgia of the printed newspaper. When I first started newspaper, I immediately thought of the old-fashioned reporters that I see in movies. (The ones with the cool hats with the press pass stuck in the band.) I’m stuck between the trend and the nostalgia.
